About The Client

ABB Electrification Canada is part of ABB, a global technology leader in electrification and automation. Based in Montreal, Quebec, this division develops emergency lighting and exit sign solutions built on Bluetooth Mesh technology, deployed across multiple continents through ABB’s international network of installers and building managers.

Project Overview

The Project

ABB already had a technical foundation adapted to Bluetooth Mesh, but no platform that let its customers actually use it with ease. The goal was to design a mobile and web application capable of turning a highly technical protocol into a tool that installers and building managers could pick up without training.

The Context

The challenge went beyond building a single app for a single market. The application had to adapt to the Bluetooth Mesh technology already in place, a wireless protocol that lets hundreds of devices communicate directly with each other rather than through a single hub, ideal for large-scale lighting networks. It also had to work across ABB’s existing tools worldwide, and account for the regulations of every country where it would be deployed. Different product ranges and connectivity standards across continents added another layer of complexity, all while end users with very different responsibilities needed to find what they needed quickly, on the same interface.

Challenges And Technical Constraints For Bluetooth Mesh Device Management

The Challenge

The core challenge was designing one interface that could serve multiple user profiles, from the technician provisioning a device on-site to the building manager checking compliance remotely, without fragmenting the experience or requiring separate tools for each role.

Constraints

Compatibility with Bluetooth Mesh technology already implemented by the client

Deployment across mobile, tablet, and web from a single codebase logic

Compliance with country-specific regulations across multiple continents

Support for different product ranges and connectivity standards by region

Our Approach And Solution For Multi-Platform Device Management

Starting With A Co-Creation Workshop

The project began with a 3-day co-creation workshop bringing ABB’s team and ours together to define the overall scope and shape the user experience across mobile, tablet, and web. Working directly with the client’s team from day one meant the interface decisions that followed were grounded in how installers and building managers actually work, not just in what the technology could do.

A Single Interface For Every User Profile

We built an application with a clear, intuitive interface that leans on the native features of Android and iOS. Users already know how their smartphone or tablet works, so keeping native functionality meant they could feel comfortable with a genuinely complex tool from the first use. The app respects distinct user paths within the same interface, letting a lighting installer and a building manager each reach their own objectives without stepping on each other’s workflow.

Bringing Bluetooth Mesh To Life On Mobile And Web

The application detects nearby devices through Bluetooth Mesh technology, configures them, and runs tests directly from the interface. Behind that simplicity sits a full implementation of the Bluetooth Mesh stack, from the network layer to mesh models, using the smartphone’s native Bluetooth stack as the GATT bearer. This covers device provisioning, node configuration and reconfiguration, and network and application key management, the technical backbone that keeps the experience just as reliable as it is simple.

Automated Alerts And Compliance Reporting

When a device malfunctions, the application automatically alerts the people responsible, specifying the nature of the issue and geolocating the faulty unit precisely. Every alert and action is documented in detailed reports generated directly from the app. This turns the platform into more than a management tool, it becomes a compliance layer that keeps emergency lighting systems continuously monitored and audit-ready.

Results And Benefits For Emergency Lighting Management

Results

The application now runs across mobile, tablet, and web, supporting both Android and iOS from a single, consistent experience. It’s deployed across multiple continents, adapting to local regulations without compromising the interface installers and managers already know. Support requests linked to onboarding and manual configuration dropped significantly once the automated alerts and reporting system replaced manual tracking.
